The Christmas Concert

THE CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Each and every year we have a Christmas concert at my school. The last week of school before winter break we do a Christmas concert. There is a play and different songs, and this year we are doing traditional songs from around the world. The play is about Santa, an elf and two girls learning about different countries and their traditions. My grade is singing three songs: O'Hanukkah, Deck the Halls and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

These are some of the decorations the other grades made.

Art in Grade 5

Art has been very successful. We have made name art, blob art, snowman art and we are making whimsical trees. Art can be hard when you don't have an idea or don't know what to do. I feel that to make it easier,  you need to be around things that inspire you or to be around things you like. I am also very excited to find out what our next art project will be this year.

Electricity

In  grade five science we are learning all about electricity.

We had a presentation on electrical safety. We were told that electricity is measured in watts.
They showed us a real life example of hazards.  If you leave a frayed cord in water and plug it in, you get electrocuted.

Being electrocuted is not the same as being shocked. The difference between electrocuted and shocked is that electrocuted means you died.  Shocked means you just got hurt. At the end of the presentation they gave us a Fortis Alberta pencil case with a pencil and light bulb eraser.

I enjoyed the presentation.

Healthy Snacks

There are a variety of ways to describe a day - snowy, cold, yummy . . . YUMMY???
Using estimating strategies and division, our students figured out how much it would cost to make 12 granola bars with one of Mrs. Gregory's (and Mr. Gregory's) favorite recipes. After estimating, measuring, mixing, melting and pressing, we tasted our day.

And then there was none . . .
No-Bake Chocolate Chip Granola Bars

Healthier and cheaper than the store bought kind!
yield: 12 BARS

prep time: 2 HOURS INCLUDING COOLING TIME
cook time: 5 MINUTES
total time: 2 HOURS 5 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS:
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup honey
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 cups quick cooking oats {not rolled oats!}
1 cup crispy rice cereal
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS:
In a large bowl, stir oats and rice cereal together. Set aside. In a small pot, melt butter, honey and brown sugar together over medium high heat until it comes to a bubble. Reduce the heat and cook 2 minutes. Pour in vanilla and stir. Pour over dry ingredients and mix well to moisten all ingredients. Pour into lightly greased small jelly roll pan {about 12x8x1} and press out to be about 3/4 inch in thickness. {If your pan isn't small enough, pack the mixture into one side. You really want to press them down so they stick together.} Sprinkle with mini chocolate chips and press down lightly. Cool on a counter top to room temperature for two hours or until the chocolate chips are set before cutting into bars. Wrap in parchment or plastic wrap and store at room temperature.

Recipe Notes: If your granola bars don't seem to be staying together when you cut them, you may have not boiled the mixture long enough...you want it to make it just past the softball stage. OR you made them too thin or you didn't pack them in tight enough. Stick them in the fridge for 20 minutes and that should help keep them together. {Be sure not to keep them in there too long or else they'll become super hard!} The next time you make them, try boiling for an extra 15 seconds or so.
Adapted from a recipe from Rachael Ray.

My John Muir

My playdoh sculpture

For our John Muir project, I decided to make a sculpture of him climbing a mountain with trees. The mountain and man were made out of playdoh and the trees were made of pine tree buds that have fallen on the ground.  I used buds from the ground because I didn't hurt the tree. I also had moss that had fallen on the ground and got some glitter glue and squirted it at the top and it dripped to the bottom so it looked like snow.

The John Muir project was so fun because I loved designing the geocache and going on the trails. I can't wait to go look for the other class' geoccache. I also liked using the hand-held digital GPS and learning new ways to find north and west.

GEOCACHING

GEOCACHING BY JORDAN BROOKS

Last Wednesday, we all hid our geocaches. We had a plastic container and we added a notepad, a pencil and gifts that you can trade or you can just sign the notepad and walk away.  We added sticks, branches and leaves, and other things that you find in the wild. We took some camouflage tape and we taped our plastic containers so that it would be harder to find. We all hid ours in different places on the trails by the cemetery. We all had so much fun because we did not do any school work. It was a terrific day.

Things we do in grade 5

In grade five we do lots of projects like a John Muir project that we have to research about John Muir.
After we research, we have to write either a first person story or just telling people what John Muir did for a living.  When I researched I had some pictures of him and I did information about him.

Another Year of Learning!

October 23, 2013

Grade Five students at Evergreen Elementary School have had a busy start to their year.

Along with the usual subjects and activities, we have been working with Christopher Lees and Robyn Anderson as part of the John Muir Award project. Each grade five class has explored walking and cross-country ski trails, and will develop geocaching points for them. Truly amazing!

Mrs. Kotyk has taken the lead in Mathematics, and has planned a variety of exciting events, including attending and then planning a Math Fair. Watch for more details! To prepare for these, students have been challenged with math puzzles and will soon share their thinking with Grade Two students in our school.

Although I have begun the blog for our grade five students, be sure to check back often and read what students have written, too.
On the Pembina Community trails, scouting out locations for our geocaches.
